Note from the Publisher:  Lately we've been reporting on bitcoin criminals getting RELEASED from jail, but this time we're reporting on one getting PUT INTO jail for operating a ponzi-scheme with the digital currency.

"A Texas man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for operating a bitcoin-related Ponzi scheme that prosecutors say resulted in the first US criminal securities fraud case related to the digital currency.

Trendon Shavers, who operated Bitcoin Savings and Trust, was also ordered by US District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan to forfeit $US1.23 million ($A1.64 million) and pay restitution in the same amount for operating what the judge called a "class Ponzi scheme".
